although it's young adult fiction and only 162 pages (and some might say, the art work in the animated feature is a world in itself), this short novel is an achivement of imagination and "evokes the uncanny" as some professional reviewer or whoever stated. a set piece set in a single house (and thus, ironically (?) an 'english house novel'), Coraline is still worth an adult reader's attention and can fit the space between steak and dessert if you like. functionally tight and in its constricted way widely-ranging. a treat for the young adult.
